WSC is standing in the centre of the group, in uniform, carrying a cane and wearing a steel “poilu” helmet [given to him by the French]; to his left, in the dark jacket, is General Emile Fayolle, commander of the 33rd Corps; third from the left of the group, wearing a cap, is Captain Edward Spiers [later Edward Spears, liaison officer with the French], and just visible behind Fayolle’s shoulder is a German prisoner.
