“African Tour, 1908” (BRDW 1/2/43)
Photograph of WSC, as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, visiting Malta, on his way to East Africa. He is sitting in formal dress, wearing a top hat and resting his hands on a cane while also holding some papers, in a line with five other men on a low balustrade, with a large tree and other plants behind. To the left sits Edward Marsh, WSC’s Private Secretary, also wearing formal dress, with his top hat in his hand, while on WSC’s other side sits Major-General Harry Barron [Commander of the Royal Artillery, Malta], in uniform, and beside him is Colonel Gordon Wilson [the husband of WSC’s aunt, Lady Sarah Wilson, earlier Lady Sarah Churchill], in a dark suit. The other two men on either end of the line, also in uniform, are not identified.
