“African Tour, 1908” (BRDW 1/2/42)
Photograph of WSC, as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, visiting Malta, on his way to East Africa. He is standing, in formal dress, with his top hat and cane in one hand, and gloves in the other, in a line with five other men, in front of a low balustrade, with a large tree and other plants behind. Three of the men are captioned: (1) Edward Marsh, WSC’s Private Secretary, who stands to the left of WSC, wearing formal dress, with his top hat in his hand, leaning back against the balustrade with his ankles crossed; (2) Colonel Gordon Wilson, of the Blues regiment [the husband of WSC’s aunt, Lady Sarah Wilson, earlier Lady Sarah Churchill], in a dark suit, fifth from the left; (3) Major-General Harry Barron [Commander of the Royal Artillery, Malta], in uniform, standing on WSC’s other side. The other two men, also in uniform, are not identified.
